Ergonomic Tips for Work and Home

As technicians, the Remington Computer Services team knows all too well how fatigued we can get sitting at a computer screen for long periods of time.  We cannot emphasize enough the importance of setting up your monitor, keyboard, and chair correctly to reduce stress on your back and neck.

Our client and friend, Dr. Lorri Haber-DiBoni from Haber-DiBoni Chiropractic in Smithfield, Rhode Island agreed to share some tips for ergonomic fitness whether you are at home or at work.

Step 1: Establish your desk height.  If you stand while working your desk will be higher than someone who sits while working.  Those who sit and stand throughout their day may have an adjustable height desktop.  Once that is determined, you can go to Step 2, adjusting the seat of your chair.

Step 2: Adjust your chair seat.  The seat of your chair should be set so that your work surface is at elbow height and your knees level with your hips.  Use a footrest or telephone book to raise your feet if necessary.   When seated, your lower back should be pushed forward slightly.  It helps to sit at the back of the chair and use the chair’s lumbar support to keep your head and neck erect.  If these adjustments are not possible with the chair you have, look for one that allows you this flexibility.

Step 3: Adjust the height of your computer screen.  Once your desk and chair height have been set, raise or lower your computer screen so that your eyes focus comfortably on the center of the screen.

Remember to take short breaks to stretch or walk throughout the day if you sit for long periods of time.  You will feel the difference in your energy level and productivity.
